Enable/Disable Hibernation in Windows Vista

This will be quick and to the point as my time is limited tonight.

I've only had to do this once but I might have to do it again in the future or it could be useful to someone else; not that it's a secret or anything. I'm refering to Hibernation in Vista.

I was working on a friend's PC and he somehow had hibernation turned on. I didn't remember seeing this in Power Options, but I looked for it again anyway. Still no luck; though I don't think I looked hard enough. I got tired of looking and took my search online and found a quick way to do this.

  1. Click on the Start orb and type "cmd" in the search box.
  2. The search results will come back with "Command Prompt", right-click on it and select "Run as administrator".
  3. User Account Control will prompt you to continue what you're doing so...click Continue.
  4. In the command prompt windows, type powercfg.exe /hibernation off (or powercfg.exe -h off) and press Enter to turn hibernation off.
  5. If you wanted to turn it back on...powercfg.exe /hibernation on (or powercfg.exe -h on) and press Enter.
  6. When you're done just type "exit" and press Enter to close the Command Prompt.
